- Nuclear Power Training Unit (P-100 and P-99) - Joint Base Charleston
Totaling 265,364 square feet, the Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) provides multiple facilities to support training in the operation, maintenance and supervision of shipboard nuclear propulsion plants. This multibuilding campus provides wet and dry laboratories, classified and unclassified administrative areas, and training areas — all within a significant explosive arc with buildings blast hardened for 1.5 megatons of explosives. New construction for the P-100 project consists of a three-story, 91,000-square-foot nuclear power operational submarine training facility; a three-story, 100,000-square-foot training support building providing a nuclear power plant simulator, staff facilities, cafeteria/dining, warehouse storage, and repair shop and storage; and a single-story, 8,000-square-foot secure area entry point for the training complex. A berthing pier extension was provided to support a third moored training ship, in addition to two existing. The 74,000-square-foot P-99 nuclear power operational support facility is a renovation/repurpose for laboratories, weapons storage, security training, classified administration areas and command staff. Laboratory spaces include radiological labs, chemical labs and simulation technology labs.
