- Pentagon Energy Dashboards
Our technology team worked with the Mission Assurance Division of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, to create energy dashboards for Washington Headquarters Services (WHS). While the goal of the project was to help the energy manager answer the question “How much energy does the Pentagon use?” we worked with the WHS to leverage database and systems knowledge gained during the Pentagon Integrated Campus Pilot Project to integrate data from other business systems.
Using energy models created during the Pentagon renovation as the baseline for energy use, we extracted real-time data from the building automation system (BAS), which monitors the electrical, gas, chilled water and steam meters throughout the building. Built inside a SharePoint portal, the web interface allowed the energy manager to examine energy data for any time period by selecting beginning and ending dates from drop-down menus. The user sets the time interval for the graphs and can include a comparison of the previous year’s energy use or compare external temperatures.
By mining the use data from the building automation system and incorporating data from previous years, the energy manager can see patterns and trends that were not evident before. In addition to the BAS, the data for the dashboards is drawn from multiple databases and systems. The building automation data is integrated with data from business, asset management and facilities management systems. This allowed the team to integrate tenant and space use information from a facility database so the energy manager can see what areas of the Pentagon and which tenants have the highest energy use. Along with the charts and graphs, the dashboards show the cumulative year-to-date energy use and the BTU/gross square footage calculations. The user can adjust the charts and graphs in the energy dashboards using properties settings, and the SharePoint pages can be modified to contain any number of charts and graphs.
