- Pond Closure
The ash pond at Kansas City Power & Light's Hawthorn Station contained the legacy wastewater and Coal Combustion Residual (CCR) material and also continued to receive flows from plant drains and sumps until early 2015. It had been in service before the boiler rebuild project completed by Burns & McDonnell in 2000. That project included dry ash conversions for both fly ash and bottom ash at the site, as well as the installation of a dry scrubber system.
As part of the pond closure project, our team designed and constructed a new concrete basin to receive these plant drain flows, primarily during upset conditions, and meter them back into the dry scrubber for reuse as water demand allows. Following construction of the concrete basin, the ash pond was dewatered, graded and capped in accordance with Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) requirements for ash pond closure.
