- Program Management for Terminal Renovation/Reconfiguration
Burns & McDonnell served as program manager for the Kansas City Aviation Department's $250 million terminal improvement program that includes terminal expansion and upgrade of terminal finishes, HVAC system replacement, concession and ground transportation services upgrades. All three terminals, totaling 60 gates and 1 million square feet, were affected. The program continues with the installation of public restroom facilities in the secure department lounges.
During the three-year program to transform Kansas City International Airport’s three terminal buildings, Burns & McDonnell was responsible for design and scheduling and served as construction manager. As program manager, a primary responsibility was to minimize the project’s impact on passengers, airlines and airport vendors.
Changes to the terminals’ systems resulted in larger, consolidated passenger pre-flight holding areas, updated fire safety features, new ticketing areas, added concessions and a new baggage handling system.
The project maintained drive-to-the-gate convenience but provided better operational characteristics, including the widening of the interior corridor to allow for less congestive passenger traffic. Several airlines were relocated to streamline traffic and relieve periodic congestion in terminals and parking garages. The project was completed in four phases over a three-year period.
