- Purdue University: Boiler MACT Compliance Design
Upon completion of a Boiler MACT study by Burns & McDonnell in February 2004, Purdue University selected Burns & McDonnell to provide engineering and design services for new air pollution control systems to put Purdue's Wade Utility Plant boilers in compliance with the new Boiler MACT standards.
As a result of the engineering study and the final rule language, Burns & McDonnell determined that installation of a pulse jet fabric filter (PJFF) as the primary control method on one or both of their coal-fired stoker boilers would be the most viable option to comply with the Boiler MACT. Also included was the installation of a spray reactor upstream of the PJFF to reduce flue gas temperatures and increase mercury removal efficiency.
Because of the possibility that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) could enforce stricter compliance guidelines that would require Purdue to upgrade both boilers, the project included schematic design development to upgrade both boilers 1 and 2 with PJFFs. The final construction bid documents address the upgrade of a single boiler.
