- Quest Laboratory Renovations
Burns & McDonnell provided preliminary and final architectural and engineering design services for an extensive laboratory renovation for Quest Diagnostics. Quest Diagnostics is located in an existing two-story building in Tucker, Ga. The first and second floors have approximately 100,000 square feet per floor.
This project was designed to pilot the LEAN concept in a clinical laboratory environment, resulting in benefits to laboratory flow, production, quality, safety and cost. This new laboratory design will increase capacity and improve efficiency. Two major components of the project:
- Lab Renovation: A revolutionary open-type lab layout and cell design based on ordering patterns, shared specimen type and decreased human movement.
- Automation: Introduction of technology/automated platform in sorting and aliquoting, including the installation of two-tier conveyors beside the processors’ tables/workstations.
The scope of this project involved renovation of parts of the second floor of the building. Renovation work was in three areas. The first area is the technical lab area, which consists of a large open lab area in the center of the building (approximately 27,000 square feet). The second area is the microbiology area (east side), and the third area is the specimen processing/technical operations area (west side).
Burns & McDonnell performed programming services, full A/E design and construction phase services for this project. Work included new flexible lab casework, utilities, HVAC modifications, and new electrical and data.
