- Runway Rehabilitation, Wheeler Downtown Airport
Burns & McDonnell performed design services for the rehabilitation of Runway 3-21 at Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport, Kansas City, Mo. The 5,050-foot-long by 150-foot-wide runway was narrowed to 100 feet wide and the existing asphalt pavement surface was milled and overlaid with new asphalt pavement. Pavement investigations with visual and subsurface investigations were initiated to evaluate the existing condition of the underlying base material. The existing base materials were evaluated for their ability to support the new asphalt pavement material.
The project also included an evaluation of the existing safety areas for compliance with current standards. The runway will change classification from a D-III runway to a B-II classification. New high intensity runway lights (HIRLs), high intensity taxiway lights at fillets, underdrains, precision pavement markings and infield grading was also completed as part of the project. The existing guidance signs on the airport were also inventoried and all outdated signs were replaced to comply with current FAA standards.
Runway 3-21 intersects the primary Runway 1-19, so phasing was critical to the project to minimize runway closure time.
