- Stadium Boulevard & Mick Deaver Memorial Drive Traffic Signal
Mick Deaver Memorial Drive serves as the primary roadway access to the new 14,000-seat basketball arena on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. In addition, the roadway is one of the primary access points to the university’s football complex, Memorial Stadium and the Hearnes Multipurpose Center. Improvements were required to accommodate the projected increases in traffic flow and safe pedestrian crossing for events at these facilities.
Burns & McDonnell prepared design plans for the replacement of the traffic signal at the Stadium Boulevard intersection. Stadium Boulevard is also a state route (MO Route 740), requiring the signal design be coordinated and approved by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). The design was performed under subcontract agreement to the firm of Trabue, Hansen & Hinshaw, the prime consultant for the design of the roadway reconstruction.
The street was widened and reconstructed from the intersection of Stadium Boulevard to provide improved access to the arena parking lots. The new signal installation replaced the existing controller with a state-of-the-art NEMA controller. The controller utilizes video actuation to accommodate protected left-turn movements and flexible phasing plans to serve special traffic needs during major traffic-generating events. The design also considered construction sequencing to minimize traffic disruption during the operational switchout between the existing and new system.
