- State Street-Root River Bridge
Harrington & Cortelyou (a Burns & McDonnell Company) provided inspection, design and construction services for the replacement of this double-leaf bascule bridge in Racine, Wisconsin. The bridge extends 133 feet from center to center of trunnions, and carries four lanes of traffic over the Root River. It also features two bikeways and two sidewalks.
The project entailed an in-depth inspection of the existing bridge, preliminary replacement type studies, and a report for major rehabilitation or replacement. Economics dictated a replacement structure consisting of an 82-foot single-leaf, rolling lift span.
The bridge team provided design, plans and specifications for the new structure, which includes fully automatic programmable controls and an electro-mechanical drive system, as well as aesthetic features to match its location in Racine’s historic district.
The bridge team also provided full-time construction phase engineering services.
