- Steam Boiler System
Burns & McDonnell was selected to provide design, construction and startup services for a complete steam boiler system to support the testing and commissioning of a nuclear submarine.
Burns & McDonnell's design concept decreased the overall construction schedule of the submarine by allowing the boats to be commissioned on land instead of in the water. Portions of the system were designed to be temporary, allowing it to be dismantled and stored. The second phase of the project installed additional piping to allow delivery of the steam to other locations within the Electric Boat submarine construction facility.
Through Burns & McDonnell's experience with similar facilities, the team met the schedule milestones on a constrained schedule. The Burns & McDonnell team coordinated with Electric Boat facilities, engineering and operations to confirm that the boiler system met parameters for quality in accordance with the U.S. Navy's specifications.
The first phase of the project was completed in September 2011, and the second phase was completed during fourth quarter 2012.
