- Telecommunications Infrastructure Upgrade
Burns & McDonnell provided the planning and design engineering for a new digital microwave backbone and trunked land mobile radio (LMR) system project for KCP&L’s Missouri operations. The new systems replaced aging analog microwave backbone and conventional UHF LMR system. Burns & McDonnell also provided construction management for the construction of the microwave system, which included site preparation, buildings, towers, antenna systems and network electronics.

The new digital microwave system includes 29 hops or paths. The backbone portion of the network has a bandwidth of OC-3. Existing tower sites were improved with new equipment buildings, fencing, power systems and generators, in addition to the telecommunication network electronics. Extensive modifications were made to existing radio towers, including height extensions and lighting upgrades. New towers were constructed. One entirely new site was built.
Burns & McDonnell provided comprehensive planning, design and construction management services for the project. These services included a master planning study and work plan development, detailed specifications, construction drawings, microwave path survey and analysis, frequency search and spectrum analysis, FCC licensing, radio coverage analysis, bid evaluations, construction management and oversight, and inspection.
The scope of design included the new analog to digital microwave upgrade and a UHF trunked LMR system with 34 repeaters and numerous base stations. Burns & McDonnell provided design, specifications, drawings, frequency coordination and licensing for this system. The construction of the LMR system was put on hold because of a corporate merger between Aquila and KCP&L.
