- Texas Substation Rehabilitations
American Electric Power (AEP) is one of the largest utilities in the nation and the largest client for Burns & McDonnell's Houston office. In 2005, Burns & McDonnell was awarded more than 50 substation rehabilitation projects for stations throughout Texas. These projects included transformer additions, breaker and switch replacements, relay panel replacements, and RTU additions and replacements, and a turnkey capacitor bank installation.
Based on 2005 successes and the expansion of the Burns & McDonnell team, we were awarded more than 70 additional projects for 2006. These projects included those similar to 2005, but added projects with larger scopes, such as three power plant/switchyard control separation projects. The largest of these power plant projects involving an existing 138/69/12-kV switchyard requiring a new control building to house more than 20 new transmission relay panels, new station RTU, battery system and included the replacement of two distribution transformers. We also supplemented AEP’s design staff to meet an aggressive transmission interconnect for a high-profile independent power producer wind farm in west Texas.
In late 2006 and into 2007, planning was under way for seven substation expansion projects requiring new transformers and distribution bay additions and 10 substation transmission line upgrades and metering projects. Additional project awards for the balance of 2007 and beyond are anticipated.
