- U.S. Route 65
Burns & McDonnell completed the design of the 6.3-mile segment of U.S. 65 in Benton County, Mo., extending from the south end of the existing divided section about 15 miles south of Sedalia, Mo. The original section along the project limits consisted of a 24-foot-wide, two-lane road with narrow turf shoulders and an at-grade intersection at state Route M-52. A new diamond interchange was designed at the intersection to provide safe movement between 65 and the east leg of M-52.
The $8 million project was designed as a limited access rural freeway with a 60-foot center median and parallel outer roadways with full-depth paved shoulders. North of Route 52, the divided highway was designed parallel to the existing road, maintaining the existing roadbed as an outer road to provide west side access and new outer roads on the east side.
Contract plans were prepared for phased surfacing to accommodate southbound mainline traffic on the existing lane pair under the interim period until the newly graded southbound lanes are surfaced in the future. The project relocated the highway on new alignment south of M-52, removing several winding curves and improving profile grade. A new parallel triple box culvert bridge was designed at the Corman Creek crossing.
Special detailed studies during preliminary design optimized the profile grade of the new roadway with respect to controlling grades of the parallel old roadway retained in the freeway section. Right-of-way plans included acquisition from 44 landowners.
