- Wind Generation System Integration
In 2008, Burns & McDonnell performed a comprehensive wind generation integration and transmission planning study for the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO). The study resulted in a regional transmission expansion plan, which is now known as the Southern Alberta Transmission Reinforcement plan (SATR). The SATR plan was developed by Burns & McDonnell and the AESO to accommodate some of the 7,500 MW of proposed wind generation in Southern Alberta.
- Network planning
- Transfer capability analysis
- Thermal loading analysis
- System voltage analysis
- Reactive support analysis
- Short circuit analysis
- Transient stability analysis
- Low-voltage ride through (LVRT) analysis
- Economic analysis
- Public involvement support
In addition to the regional transmission system analysis from which the SATR plan was developed, Burns & McDonnell also performs detailed interconnection analysis of constraints associated with each proposed wind farm individually. These interconnection proposal and need identification document reports are the basis for transmission network upgrades as the AESO and its customers begin to harvest the vast wind resources of Southern Alberta.
Working within the AESO's interconnection process, Burns & McDonnell has performed more than 40 different studies on 30 wind farms since 2008. These studies determine the interconnection configuration of each wind farm within the staged construction timeline of the SATR plan.
- Transmission network up to 500-kV
