Shalis Winder builds a culture where safety starts with caring for people.
Raised in western Nebraska as the oldest of five children, Shalis learned early the value of responsibility, hard work and looking out for others. Through decades of leadership in complex industrial environments, he has helped teams strengthen trust, accountability and a commitment to protecting one another.
As chief safety officer, he guides programs and initiatives that strengthen the firm’s culture of caring, coaching and mentoring while empowering teams to make safer decisions and deliver stronger project outcomes.
In the community:
Shalis serves on the board of the Do Like Duke Foundation, where he supports efforts to create inclusive opportunities for young people through sports, mentorship and leadership development.
What inspired you to pursue your career?
Early in my career, I developed a passion for execution and found immense satisfaction in seeing a project through from concept to operation. I have led complex projects across refining, midstream, polymer, petrochemical, industrial biofuel, pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries, coordinating all phases from project definition through engineering, procurement, construction and budget administration.
As the size, scale and complexity of projects grew, one constant remained: A well-planned job was a safe job. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to shape how I lead today.
How do you and your team make the world a better place?
We make the world a better place by creating an environment where people can do their best work safely. Our goal is for every person to return home each day in the same or better condition than when they arrived.
That starts with a culture of caring — one that values people, learns from experience and challenges us to get better every day. When people feel supported and empowered, they are better equipped to tackle complex challenges for our clients, our communities and each other.
What do you do in your free time?
I spend most of my free time being incredibly proud of my four children. After decades of participating in competitive sports, I’ve moved from the fields to the sidelines. These days, I’m a full-time soccer and baseball dad.
What inspires you each day?
What inspires me most is the determination of our people. Every day, I see individuals and teams overcome challenges, support one another and find ways to deliver for our clients and communities.
