KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Continued support of critical infrastructure projects and diversified services helped Burns & McDonnell achieve a strong standing in the 2021 Engineering News-Record (ENR) annual rankings of consulting engineering services.

The ever-evolving transition of the power generation mix toward renewable sources helped the firm retain its No. 1 rankings in Power and electrical Transmission and Distribution for the sixth year in a row.

In total, the 100% employee-owned firm ranked in the top 10 in 20 of this year’s ENR Top Design Firms Sourcebook sectors, including No. 3 in Wind and No. 4 in Data Centers.

“Because of the diversity of industries that our firm serves, our primary business of developing critical infrastructure and flexibility in project delivery models, we had a record-breaking growth year that has continued throughout 2021,” says Ray Kowalik, chairman and CEO, Burns & McDonnell. “The development of technology services, such as cloud computing, has been an area of explosive growth. There is also a cumulative effect with our businesses that provide design and construction services for power, water, environmental and fiber optics design and construction services — all of which are needed to develop these new data centers.”

For the third time in the last four years, Burns & McDonnell ranks No. 9 overall among ENR’s Top 500 Design Firms, announced in April. Based on engineering and architectural design revenue earned in the prior fiscal year, the annual survey of the 500 largest U.S.-based design firms serves as a preview of the publication’s comprehensive sourcebook rankings.

In construction rankings released by ENR earlier this year, Burns & McDonnell is No. 6 among Design-Build firms and No. 12 among Program Management firms.
