SAN DIEGO, California — SAN Fuel Company, a consortium of airline partners at San Diego International Airport (SAN), joined fuel operator Menzies Aviation last week in activating the airport’s first-ever hydrant fueling system, marking a significant milestone in modernizing the airport’s fueling infrastructure.

Designed by Burns & McDonnell, the new fueling system constructs the necessary fuel piping and infrastructure for underground fuel distribution to the west side of the airport. The new hydrant system currently supports Gates 48-51 and is the first phase of an airport-wide hydrant system conversion that enhances environmental safety and operational efficiency.

Since 2016, the SAN fuel program has made improvements to meet future demands. The program expanded fuel storage capacity and transitioned aircraft fuel operations from refueler trucks to a modern hydrant system. These upgrades accompanied significant terminal expansion projects that are currently transforming the airport.

Burns & McDonnell has partnered with SAN Fuel and the SDCRAA to transform the fuel storage and distribution system at SAN. This comprehensive effort has encompassed master planning, program management, design and construction.
