We provided design services for expanding and modernizing a 4-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 24, improving safety and mobility on the segment between Wilson Road and Missouri Route 291 in Independence, Missouri.
The project was split into three segments and included the addition of a continuous two-way left-turn lane, a sidewalk and shared-use path for the length of the corridor. The design entails widening of the corridor from a four-lane typical section to a five-lane typical section, including the complete replacement or upgrade of 10 traffic signals that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), three rectangular rapid flashing beacons, LED streetlighting and an enclosed storm sewer system for the length of the project.
Our design team worked closely with the City of Independence, MoDOT and various stakeholders to deliver the project, which was developed using a cost-share model. The project began with a road safety audit and access management study to identify areas with high crash rates.
Our team performed conceptual design to develop cost-effective solutions for improving corridor mobility and safety. Public meetings facilitated the gathering of input regarding issues in the corridor and potential solutions for solving them. The design team carried out plans through final design according to the MoDOT project delivery process and supported the request for environmental services (RES) process by providing the supporting documents to facilitate the environmental review process.
