DULUTH, Minnesota — Burns & McDonnell, a 100% employee-owned engineering and construction firm, celebrated the expansion of its Duluth office with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house, marking the company’s continued growth in the region and its move into a larger office space at 11 E. Superior Street in Duluth, Minnesota.
The expanded office reflects the firm’s long-term commitment to the Twin Ports, the Iron Range, the Arrowhead Region and the broader Upper Midwest. The new space will support the firm’s growing local team as it continues helping clients plan, design, permit, construct and manage critical infrastructure projects across the region.
Burns & McDonnell moved into the larger space in April of 2026, which spans approximately 3,700 square feet and includes 24 workstations, four conference spaces and room for continued growth.
Burns & McDonnell has a long-standing history in the region. More than 100 years ago, the firm developed municipal water infrastructure solutions in Virginia and Hibbing, Minnesota, as those mining communities were beginning to boom. In the 1920s, engineers who would become part of the firm’s Transportation Group helped convert the original steel lattice bridge in Canal Park from its former trolley configuration into today’s iconic Aerial Lift Bridge.
“The expansion of our Duluth office reflects the growth of our team, the strength of our client partnerships and our commitment to northern Minnesota,” says Gene Sieve, senior vice president and Upper Midwest Region general manager at Burns & McDonnell. “As a 100% employee-owned firm, we take pride in investing in the communities where we live, work and build. This larger space gives our employee-owners more room to collaborate, grow and continue delivering integrated solutions that strengthen the critical infrastructure serving the region.”
Burns & McDonnell continues to support regional clients and community partners, including the Duluth Chamber of Commerce. Through these partnerships, the firm is helping strengthen infrastructure, reliability, resiliency, community and economic development throughout northeastern Minnesota and the surrounding region.
“Burns & McDonnell’s continued investment in Duluth is a strong signal of confidence in the future of our region,” said Matt Baumgartner, president of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce. “Their expanded presence brings high-quality jobs, specialized expertise and additional capacity to support the infrastructure and development projects that will drive long-term economic growth. As our region continues to attract new opportunities, having partners like Burns & McDonnell helps strengthen the conditions businesses need to succeed and communities need to thrive.”
With the expanded office in the heart of downtown Duluth, Burns & McDonnell is positioned to continue growing alongside the region’s evolving infrastructure, energy, environmental and economic development needs. The firm is actively hiring to support continued growth and remains focused on creating opportunities for employee-owners, strengthening local partnerships, and delivering integrated solutions that make clients successful.
