We have provided airfield electrical and communications engineering design services at Duluth International Airport for more than a decade as part of the airport’s multiphase Airfield Improvements Program. Our projects have included runway and taxiway lighting and signage upgrades, navigational aids, and control tower communications engineering.
Taxiway A is the primary parallel taxiway that serves Runway 9-27, the airport’s 10,591-foot-long primary commercial service runway. The Duluth Airport Authority (DAA) has executed a multiphase program to realign and reconstruct the full length of Taxiway A to adhere to current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design standards; this includes replacing pavement, airfield lighting and sign equipment at the end of its service life.
Our projects at DLH have upgraded lighting and signage for Runway 9-27, Runway 3-21, Taxiway C, and five phases of the Taxiway A reconstruction. We have also provided airfield electrical design for the Taxiway A Phase 6 project under construction in 2026 and the Taxiway A Phase 7 project that is slated to be built in 2027.
In addition to the airfield lighting and signage improvements, we have provided electrical engineering for replacement of navigational aids and communications engineering for the new air traffic control tower (ATCT) that replaces the 1950s-era tower, the third-oldest operating ATCT in the United States.
The Airfield Improvements Program represents a coordinated, multiyear modernization of critical airfield systems. Through successive runway, taxiway, navigational aid and ATCT communications projects, our team has helped the airport authority replace aging infrastructure, improve lighting and signage reliability, and support compliance with current FAA design standards. This continuity of service has allowed improvements to be coordinated across multiple construction seasons while maintaining safe airfield operations and advancing the long-term resiliency of the airfield’s electrical and communications systems.
