Project

Behind-the-Meter BESS to Support Data Center

To support the rapidly growing power requirements of a major data center campus, we designed and constructed the 300-MWh Plato South battery energy storage system (BESS) as part of a dedicated behind-the-meter generation facility.

Leveraging our team experience within the battery storage market, we helped design and install a BESS solution to address the dynamic load profiles and the demanding data center reliability targets. We initiated design and early procurement activities under a limited notice to proceed (LNTP) to allow work to begin immediately while the complete engineer-procure-construct (EPC) agreement was negotiated. The project mobilized just three months after starting design and achieved mechanical completion on time, meeting the client’s critical completion dates 10 months after signing the LNTP.

This unparalleled speed-to-market was achieved through innovation, a streamlined project life cycle and a highly experienced project team. Meeting the accelerated schedule required proactive coordination by the EPC team, in conjunction with the Will-Power staff, equipment suppliers and multiple third-party engineering companies responsible for other portions of the facility.

Our self-perform construction team — with gigawatts of BESS experience — gave the project team direct control over field execution. It also enabled innovation in project sequencing and optimization during installation. The team also used a company-owned gantry crane to install the Tesla Megapacks, supporting an efficient, safe and carefully coordinated installation approach.

Coordination and Closeout: Demonstrated Success

We also performed engineering design and integration for the medium voltage (MV) BESS enclosure, which served as the main electrical interface hub between the BESS and the other generation assets on the site. A key part of the success was assisting Will-Power staff with coordination between the enclosure vendor, MV equipment suppliers and multiple third-party engineering companies responsible for different aspects of the scope. Our team performed detailed instrument controls and interface design, raceway design, foundation and civil/structural design for the final grade.

Our experience in commissioning and startup of BESS installations supported the client with a flawless startup. This work included using the BESS as simulated AI data center load and supporting power distribution to commission the rotating power generation equipment for the power plant.

The completed facility demonstrates how integrated EPC delivery, early procurement and self-perform construction can help bring large-scale energy infrastructure online within the demanding schedules associated with data center development.
