Our team served as the F-35 technical specialist in preparing critical infrastructure at two Belgian air bases for the arrival of F-35 fighter jets. Serving as the F-35 technical specialist, our team collaborated closely with Belgian engineering and construction firm Jan De Nul to modernize both bases, helping them meet the operational and security requirements of fifth-generation aircraft.
The two bases are essential to Belgium and Europe because of their proximity to the headquarters of both NATO and the European Union in Brussels. The project consisted of similar facilities at each base, with supporting airfield infrastructure designed to be integrated into the air bases’ existing airside and landside operations. Our team emphasized a design approach that balanced architectural appeal with practical functionality. Sustainable features were a priority — including solar panel installations for on-site power generation and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems.
The flightline area provides a 35,000-square-meter secure area with six docks for aircraft maintenance, fuel cell maintenance, corrosion control, mission training, squadron administrative spaces, and a high-security area. It also includes two 4,200-square-meter six-bay flightline aircraft shelters, a 3,700-square-meter four-bay aircraft quick reaction alert shelter, and a ready storage building for munitions management and maintenance.
The administration area includes offices, meeting rooms, showers, a cafeteria, and additional amenities to support base staff and visiting personnel.
