CALGARY, Alberta — Reinforcing a commitment to its Canadian clients, Burns & McDonnell is promoting Jeff Smith to lead the engineering, architecture and construction firm’s Oil, Gas & Chemical Group at its Calgary, Alberta, regional office. The Calgary office offers full-service engineering, construction and consulting solutions in a variety of sectors.

Smith-Jeff

Smith joined Burns & McDonnell in 2006 as a process engineer at the 100% employee-owned firm’s global headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. He will transition into his new role in March.

“My family and I are excited to launch our next chapter in Calgary,” Smith says. “As I move into my new role, I am looking forward to expanding our team and increasing the oil, gas and chemical services we offer our clients while growing new relationships with Canadian owners, fabricators and construction contractors.”

Smith is currently leading the Burns & McDonnell team on a large renewable diesel project in California, which involves converting a petroleum refinery into a renewable fuels manufacturing facility. This project has involved over 500 engineering staff and will position the facility well to support the client’s overall energy transition goals.

Smith has served in key leadership roles on numerous other projects, including process engineering lead on a hydrogen plant project in Memphis, Tennessee; engineering manager for a grassroots gas plant in McClure, Oklahoma; engineer-procure-construct (EPC) project manager for a refinery processing flexibility revamp project in Ponca City, Oklahoma; and EPC project manager for a new fractionation unit and overall facility expansion in Mont Belvieu, Texas.

Smith has also managed over $2 billion in projects for our core clients.

“Companies are increasingly seeking renewable solutions to offset and reduce carbon emissions,” says Warren Kennedy, senior vice president in the Oil, Gas & Chemical Group. “Jeff’s experience leading renewable projects and refinery conversions will benefit our Canadian partners as they transition to supporting energy alternatives.”

Don Chase, vice president of Burns & McDonnell Canada, adds, “Growing our Calgary regional office will not only allow us to expand our offerings to meet our clients’ needs but also support our communities by creating new jobs in the region.”

Burns & McDonnell established a Canadian division in 2006 and opened offices in Calgary in 2012 and Toronto in 2016 to support Canada’s industrial and utility infrastructure.
