The Light Lab exhibit at Science City, located in Kansas City’s historic Union Station, is an immersive, interactive experience that explores the everyday applications of the electromagnetic spectrum. Our team designed and built the exhibit, inspired by the seventh winner in the Burns & McDonnell Battle of the Brains STEM competition.
Schools across the Kansas City region compete for education grants by developing innovative exhibit concepts for Science City, and one student team sees its winning idea brought to life. The competition operates on a two-year cycle, with one year for the competition and the following year for exhibit construction. Since 2011, the collaboration has been a part of Science City’s evolution into a world-class science center. The project is part of a more than $10 million investment in Science City’s ongoing transformation.
Delta Woods Middle School, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, won the grand prize in the 2023-24 contest, from a field of 740 entries. The students collaborated with our professionals to design and build their concept into a permanent exhibit. This immersive process gave students a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how professional architects, engineers and exhibit designers turn ideas into reality. Working side-by-side with our team, students contributed to brainstorming sessions, design reviews and even hands-on prototyping, deepening their understanding of STEM careers and the built environment.
