- Site Evaluation and Master Planning
Burns & McDonnell assisted the client with assessing facilities in several states. Burns & McDonnell evaluated the overall condition of the facility including HVAC and mechanical equipment, structural integrity, site infrastructure as well as the cost to renovate the facilities to meet their new requirements.
Ultimately the client chose a facility in Huntsville, Ala. The facility comprises three buildings on 144 acres. The buildings consist of a 570,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, a 120,000-square-foot development center and a 100,000-square-foot administration building. Burns & McDonnell was also selected to assist with the overall site master plan, construction and renovation.
Master planning activities consisted of developing the overall long-term vision of the campus. This vision included proposed outdoor recreation areas, on-site day care facilities, product test ranges, as well as employee and family services. In addition, our Lean Six Sigma team worked closely with the client's Continuous Improvement group to develop factory layouts and develop supply chain strategies for the new facility.
Renovation and construction activities began in the second quarter of 2014. These activities included recommissioning of existing mechanical equipment, installation of multiple indoor test spaces, office and support area renovations, installation of a wet process line and associated water treatment, and facilitization of the manufacturing building to allow for the manufacture of multiple product lines. The project is a multiyear effort and is expected to be complete in 2016.
