Industry today looks to liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet peak-shaving local demand curves, to supply remote locations with energy, to refuel ships with lower-emission fuels —also known as bunkering — and to fulfill international need for export quantities of natural gas.
How Demand Growth Affects LNG Export Facilities
New LNG projects and improvements to existing facilities have become critical to meeting global demand. We build partnerships with LNG facility owners, designing and constructing reliable and innovative gas processing solutions, terminal facilities and transport pipelines that build trust, save money and resolve challenges.
The Burns & McDonnell Advantage
As an extension of your team, we help you determine cost-effective and cost-efficient steps at every project phase. We deliver solutions from conceptual design and studies to engineer-procure-construct (EPC) completion, commissioning and startup. When needed, our team can call on our full breadth of environmental and consulting professionals to address any siting, permitting or other project needs.
Our focus on safety, excellence in project execution and experience in teaming with technology licensors means we lay the groundwork for successful LNG projects. We help you work through the challenges of greenfield and brownfield LNG facilities, and we provide complete EPC services through multiple contracting strategies. We also can apply in-house, direct hire construction options, both union and nonunion.
LNG Terminal Development
Amid growth in the LNG export market in the U.S., we support development of new terminals and perform debottlenecking projects to increase throughput and reliability. Our experience includes design of modular systems within LNG terminals, as well as building export terminals for natural gas liquids (NGLs). Our teams understand the complexity of these projects and routinely design the pipelines that supply these terminals and associated loadout facilities.
Beyond support inside battery limits (ISBL), we have broad experience in terminal interconnect projects including such infrastructure as electrical transmission lines, substations, pipeline interconnects, pipeline laterals, metering stations and compressor stations. We have pipeline and facilities teams to support natural gas storage projects, including cavern storage.
As terminal operators explore power generation options for facility islanding, behind-the-meter supplemental power or sale of power back to the grid, we have extensive experience developing and executing these power projects, whether they are fueled by natural gas or renewable sources.
Integrated Services for LNG Projects, Start to Finish
Our team has experience determining every critical element of LNG projects:- Technology assessments. We help select the right process flow, remove contaminants, liquefy, store, transport and vaporize in ways that meet economic and operability objectives.
- Contaminant effects. We determine how to remove and handle natural gas contaminants in the liquefaction process.
- Process integration. Utilities, electrical systems, controls, waste stream disposal, truck loading, storage and boil-off gas management are all streamlined with your facility’s balance-of-plant operations.
- Permitting and siting. In-house professionals have experience managing the specific requirements for LNG plants, minimizing safety hazards for personnel and the public.
- Transport services. LNG and natural gas transport can be completed in multiple ways. We cover all pipeline and station needs from supply to final destination, including compressor stations, metering, regulating stations and pump stations.
- Startup and commissioning. We work with your operations team to bring your project online safely and efficiently.
- Upgrade planning. We help with evaluating and implementing mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation and control upgrades to existing facilities to maintain compliance, efficiency and reliability.
